Over the course of my last semester in undergrad, I have had many songs help me get through the weeks. As my last post (for now), I would like to share my top 10 songs that have helped me through my last semester in college. (These are not listed in any particular order.)
- Hampstead by Ariana Grande
- NUEVAYol by Bad Bunny
- Like Him by Tyler, The Creator feat. Lola Young
- NEW DROP by Don Tolliver
- 97 by Doja Cat
- L’AMOUR DE MA VIE by Billie Eilish
- Vanish Into You by Lady Gaga
- Obsesion by Aventura
- Conceited by Lola Young
- Luther by Kendrick Lamar & SZA
These songs have such immense meaning in my personal life that has helped me stay on track with my education. As well as indulging in the music industry since that is what I am getting my degree in. Each of these songs not only have lyrics that correlate with me, but the production quality is impeccable. Hampstead, for example, has a very instrumental vibe. Grande’s normal music has a bit of EDM inspiration as well as a large utilization of harmonies. With Hampstead, it is all acoustic instruments as well as her voice. It provides a strong look at how powerful traditional instrumentation and vocal harmony can be. I also occasionally enjoy Doja Cat’s rap album “Scarlet” when I need to be hyped up. Whether that is for a party or for a mental breakdown, her strong rapping skills will always lift my spirits. With 97, it is a lot calmer of a rap. But her line “Looks like we don’t give a shit” really motivates me. Especially in moments where you feel like you may be overreacting or pressed. If you ever need a hype song, Doja Cat is exactly where its at. I would also like to highlight the Spanish songs that are on my list. As a proud Boricua, I like to remind myself where I come from. Bad Bunny is a good choice for any type of cultural validation I need. NUEVAYoL hits so much harder. Due to being a Boricua from New York, this song encapsulates the streets of New York during the Puerto Rican Day Parade. As well as Obsesion by Aventura. This song was one of the first songs I remember from when I was a child. As for the other songs, they all have a personal meaning for me that is a little too deep for a blog post. But I highly recommend giving all of these a listen, it could resonate with you more than you think. I want to give an honorable mention to Anxiety by Doechii. I really enjoy the remake of this original song. It brought me back to my teenage years rather than my childhood years which was a nice feeling of nostalgia.
