true story Breakdown

[Chorus]

This is a true story about all the lies
You fantasized
‘Bout you and I
This is a true story about all the games
I know you play

[Post-Chorus]

No, this is not what I need
Gimme love, love, gimme love
Not what I want
Gimme love, love, gimme love
Ain’t gonna happen to me
Gimme love, love, gimme love, love
Love, gimme love, gimme love, love
Love, love, love

[Verse 1]

I’ll play the villain if you need me to
I know how this goes, yeah
I’ll be the one you pay to see, play the scene
Roll the cameras please

[Pre-Chorus]

Turning like a dime
Wasting all their time
Sneaking like a creep in the night
But I’ll play whatever part you need me to

[Chorus]

This is a true story about all the lies
You fantasized
‘Bout you and I
This is a true story about all the games
I know you play

[Post-Chorus]

No, this is not what I need
Gimme love, love, gimme love
Not what I want
Gimme love, love, gimme love
Ain’t gonna happen to me
Gimme love, love, gimme love, love
Love, gimme love, gimme love, love
Love, love, love

[Verse 2]

I’ll play the bad girl if you need me to
If it makes you feel better
I’ll be the one you love to hate, can’t relate
Too much on my plate

[Pre-Chorus]

See it in your eyes
You got too much time
For fun, you like to pray for my demise
But I’ll play whatever part you need me to
And I’ll be good in it too

[Chorus]

This is a true story about all the lies
You fantasized
‘Bout you and I
This is a true story about all the games
I know you play

[Post-Chorus]

No, this is not what I need
Gimme love, love, gimme love
Not what I want
Gimme love, love, gimme love
Ain’t gonna happen to me
Gimme love, love, gimme love, love
Love, gimme love, gimme love, love
Love, love, love

Gimme love, love, gimme love, love
Not what I need
Gimme love, love, gimme love, love
Ain’t gonna happen to me
Gimme love, love, gimme love, love
Love, gimme love, gimme love, love
Love, love, love

“True Story” by Ariana Grande is her message to the media regarding making assumptions on her life. It goes into detail about her feelings with recent developments with her relationships.

[Chorus]

This first section seems very much like a confrontation. Unlike my interpretation of Perfect Celebrity, Ariana makes it very clear that she is talking to us. She also exposes how she knows the media twists her story. So just from this section, it is a message for the media and content creators who create stories about her but also for her true fans who want to know the truth and have faith in her. It shows a refreshing transparency from Ariana especially since the world has had their eyes on her a lot recently with the release of Wicked and her new relationship with Ethan Slater

[Post-Chorus]

Keeping the theme of transparency, this section illuminates her true feelings hence “true story”. She expresses the want for love, but I feel it is not in a relationship sort of way. This album encapsulates her issues in her relationships and the sprout of new ones. This love feels more like a support kind of love. To respect her as if she was a close friend, not an icon for generations. I think this is extremely important in the music industry nowadays due to the lack of transparency with celebrities’ mental health.

[Verse 2]

Ariana admits in this section how she feels about the bad representation. It is often where celebrities will just live with the drama that is created about them. Ariana being one of them. So saying “I’ll be the bad girl if you need me to” is a direct meaning of ‘do whatever you want to me, I am still going to be me’. As someone who is a huge advocate for mental health, watching Ariana’s growth when it comes to her mental health is very admirable.

[Pre-Chorus]

Lastly after talking about how she could just be painted however the media wants to paint her, she further pushes her point on how she is not oblivious to these different portraits of her. SHe is not purposefully agreeing to change her image. But agreeing to not give in. TO express herself without thinking about haters or fans or anything. It is apparent in this song that true connections are important to her.

Overall, this song is very similar ro Perfect Celebrity. But here Araina is transparent and does not sugar coat anything. The name “true story” is a perfect name that encapsulates each lyric to a T. In my personal opinion, “true story” IS a true story. Of course there will be speculation but that is exactly what this song is about. Ironic isn’t it?
